Keeper of the Lost Souls
By Kristy Centeno
Release Date: June 2013
Genre: YA Paranormal

Summary from Goodreads:
Bryn McCaskey is young, naïve, and can talk to ghosts. Like her mother and grandmother, Bryn is part of a breed of witches called The Keepers of the Lost Souls, whose main purpose is to guard those spirits which are permanently or temporarily grounded in the world of the living.
Because Bryn is a witch, she’s fairly comfortable dealing with all sorts of threats, which she does with ease and confidence. Handling supernatural creatures is as easy to her as baking a pie. Dealing with people however, is something she is yet to learn how to handle.

Unfortunately, as her 18th birthday approaches, and the time for her to take on her first assignment finally arrives, Bryn is forced to confront her inability to communicate with others in an effort to save the one soul that can mean the difference between life and death for mankind.
Johnny Shaw is a lost soul with a personal vendetta against witches. A vendetta he has carried on even after death. However, as much as he might hate them, in order to stop a century old threat, he must join forces with one. When fate brings them together, not only will they be forced to learn how to work as a team, but they will have to depend on each other to stop an evil witch carrying a six hundred year grudge.

J&M's Book Diaries rating

J&M's Review:
It's been a minute since J&M have read a YA novel. The moment we read the first chapter we became hooked. Bryn McCaskey the protagonist was an interesting character from the get-go. She comes from a long line of witches and is a Keeper Witch of lost souls. From the moment she graduated from high school and turned 18 years old Bryn was assigned her first charge, which means she has a whole clutch of souls to guard and protect from demons or soul eaters.

Bryn's 23rd charge a soul name Johnny Shaw was anything but compromising. Johnny was the last of his family line and his soul was out for revenge for his family and the evil witch that had killed them. He was a unique soul, a very powerful soul who used his powers on Bryn during their first encounter. He didn't want to have anything to do with Bryn and knowing that she was his families worst enemy- a witch.

Although Johnny and Bryn were both stubborn and butting-heads in the beginning. Once Johnny learned to trust Bryn as his Keeper Witch their connection and bond grew and with that they conquered and defeated the evil witch who tried to destroy and wreak havoc on earth.

This story was intriguing. Kristy Centeno did a wonderful job creating a story about witches, trust, family, and responsibilities. We appreciate that the author incorporated Chinese history or folklore and/or that the characters were of an asian descent. Not a lot of young readers are aware of the Asian culture, so this was something fresh to read about. The book was fun and witty, even the annoying characters grew on us. Overall this was a nice and fast read. We would highly recommend this book, it was a great YA novel.
