J&M's review:

Emma Carson helped her mom bake cookies for their new neighbors who has just moved in across the street. Once they arrived at their neighbors house Emma's gaze locked onto the teenage boy who approached her. Cole Marlowe was tall, long limbs, shaggy dark blonde hair with gray-blue eyes and he is 3 years older than Emma who was only 12 years old. He was the cutest boy she had ever seen.

Although Emma had the biggest crush on Cole growing up, he never looked at her the same way she did him. In his senior year of high school he had asked Emma's older sister Layla to prom in which she lied and told Emma that Cole had taken her virginity. Since then she always felt like Cole had belonged to Layla.

Emma always felt like she lived in her sisters shadows. Unlike Layla who was spunky, smart, gorgeous, & a confident cheerleader. Emma wasn't very social. She's very shy, a bit awkward, and nerdy.

It wasn't till she graduated high school and moved abroad to Paris for art school that she learned to live her life. She wanted to escape the stigma of being Layla's little sister. She grew up and became more confident and comfortable in her own skin. When she returned back to the states 5 years later to be closer to her family, Emma found a job that allowed her to use her creative talent as a graphic designer.

One morning while she was out for a coffee run for her boss she ran smacked into Cole spilling her coffee all over him. It's been 6 years since she last seen him and he is even better looking than before. He is still tall with a broad frame, short cropped hair, GQ style. Cole was breath-taking.

Luckily, for Cole his mom calls him to invite him to dinner at the Carson's house that Saturday. After their morning run-in he wanted to see her again. Cole felt a little guilty that he felt this way towards Emma though. He knew their parents still harbored a hope that he and Layla will get together. It would be awkward for him to show interest in Emma instead, she was off-limits.

After their family dinner Layla was very excited and still so attracted to Cole. She told Emma that it was in her future that Cole would be her husband. Cole was her new mission. So Emma never tells her sister that she had ran into Cole earlier in the week.

Cole ends up texting Emma the following Monday for lunch. While waiting for her arrival, all he thought about how stunningly beautiful she was. Her long, lithe body left a lasting impression on him. The air of confidence and sensuality she now possessed he was unable to stop thinking about her.

Since their lunch date, Emma and Cole kept in contact. They would text each other constantly, go out to lunch, until they were secretly dating. Emma was worried to tell her family. She didn't want her sister to be angry with her when they had finally come to a good place in their relationship as sisters. Cole and Emma continued to go to family gatherings and hiding their relationship status. It was hard on Cole and he hated that their family didn't know about them.

When Emma finally broke the news to her family. Her parents approved but Layla was livid with her. They both felt betrayed by the others lies. Fortunately, they are sister and even though it took quite some time Layla did come around and forgave Emma.

This was such a fun story to read. Almost like one of those good chick-flick , romance movies you can watch repetitively. Brenda Rothert is a talented writer and she does a fantastic job at catching her readers interest in her books. They have the perfect amount of drama, love, romance, and angst. We enjoyed reading about Emma and Cole. They shared a very sweet and romantic connection. Oh, let's not forget the juicy moments as well with Emma's paint sets. *fanning myself* We just received and ARC copy of the second book to the Now series and we are looking forward to see if Layla ends up with her soul-mate and future husband.

Since her job allows her to support her siblings, 24-year-old Abby takes it all off in stride. She’s never had trouble keeping men at arm’s length – until she meets ER physician Chris Reneau, who is sexy, sweet and interested in more than what’s beneath her clothes. Commitment-averse Chris finds himself in uncharted territory. He wants Abby, that’s clear, but he can’t accept not having all of her. As the distance between them erodes, he tries to convince Abby to give up stripping for a chance at something real.

As the two of them get closer, Abby realizes that truly baring it all has nothing to do with her body. Chris makes her feel more exposed than she ever has, and she has to grapple with what’s left when her notions about herself and those around her are stripped away, leaving only the naked truth.

J&M's Book Diaries rating:

J&M's review:
First off, we give 3.5 stars for this book. We could have rated it a 4 had the book been written better. There are many parts in the book where the chapter should have ended and a new one start. Parts of the story were all jumbled together & very confusing to follow. Maybe it was the ARC that we received. As a second self-published book by Brenda Rothert, she creates an enjoyable world for her readers. We have read her other book and it was much better written so we are assuming this could have been an unedited version?

With that being said, the story itself was pretty good. Abby is a 24 year old and the oldest of her siblings. She is an assistant by day and a stripper at night. Working two jobs making ends meet and supporting her 3 younger siblings and mother who has an illness.

One evening while Abby is stripping and doing a personal lap dance for a bachelor party. She dances for the Groom-To- Be and the guys offered to buy the "Best Man" Chris who she describes handsome as a "Greek God" a personal dance but he is uninterested. Although he was unaffected by any of the ladies at the club, Abby did feel a connection and sexual energy from him.

Later the next morning Abby is woken up by an alarm. She rushes her mother to the Emergency room where she runs into the E.R. doctor who happens to be the sexy "Greek God" from the strip club.

Both Abby & Chris hit it off from there & even though they claim they only want a "friendship" they have an irresistible attraction. They soon start seeing one another and having some steamy moments and make-out sessions.

When they eventually talk about a real relationship Chris has a problem with Abby's continue work as a stripper but he doesn't force her to choose between them or her job. Chris has his issues as well but he is so understanding, a caring guy and rushing to Abby's side when she needs help. Chris stands up for her no matter the situation. They have a pretty sweet relationship in the book that you wouldn't expect a doctor and stripper to have.

We liked how Abby is an independent person, she's hard-working, and very maternal and mature for taking care of her younger sister's and her mother.

The book and the plot of the story was good, it was definitely a page-turning read. The ending was the icing on the cake for us. It was super cute!

Cheating Death by Jen Naumann

Cheating Death
By Jen Naumann
Published: April 9, 2013
Genre: Paranormal Romance, Fantasy, New Adult, YA

Lysandra Brooks remembers everything about the day she almost drowned alongside her grandma, especially the set of mysterious eyes she saw at the bottom of the lake. Ever since then, she's been seeing strange things when she is near water—things that aren't really there. Because of it, Lysandra has the tendency to avoid anything that isn't on dry land. On her last day of high school, however, the biggest party of the year is set to take place at a fellow senior's lakeside mansion. Despite her fears, Lysandra decides to prove to her friends and herself that she can handle it.

But after a horrific night of drinking and drama that leaves Lysandra feeling lonely and confused, she nearly drowns for a second time, only to be saved by the new guy in town. From that moment on, Lysandra's world is forever changed by mind blowing secrets, including a revelation that something sinister is after her soul.

J&M's Book Diaries rating:

J&M's review:

Cheating Death has brought us back to our teenage years. The rebelling, the friends, the boys, drinking, the "lying" to parents that you were going to spend the night at a friends house when really you were out partying.

When Lysandra was younger her and her grandmother fell into the lake and although her grandmother drowned, she was mysteriously saved and cheated death. Ever since her drowning incident Lysandra is haunted and has nightmares about her past and avoids talking to any body about her issues. She would see ghost or spirits any time she was around a large body of water.

The week of graduation she meets a new student at her school. Aydin is tall, lean, handsome, with mysteriously beautiful blue eyes. Those eyes she recognizes but she can't remember why she is familiar with them.

When Lysandra and her friends attend a senior party, her life is turned upside-down. Something terrible happens to Lysandra and she can't remember any of it. Her friends started blaming her for what happened that evening. Lysandra was a mess when she unconciously drove a friends car off the bridge.

What happens from there on out is something we can not tell, it will just ruin the book. So you're just going to have to pick it up and read this story and experience the life-lessons it has showed us.

Cheating Death was a bit of a roller-coaster ride for us. In the beginning, Lysandra was a little annoying, just really immature. But while the book progressed and she had to make life-changing decisions her character began to grow on us. She became more selfless. Even with how her friends treated her she still cared and worried for them and for the outcome of their lives.

The ending killed us! It was bittersweet and one we definitely weren't expecting. *sigh* Jen every time we thought we knew how the book was going you did a great job at surprising us.

Although this was a Paranormal story, there was a lot of life lessons everyone could learn from reading this whether you're a teenager or an adult. It teaches you about courage, strength, & forgiveness.

Even though we may have been annoyed in the beginning with Lysandra and her friends. Jen Naumann did a great job of creating such real characters. Thinking back in our past, we have to admit we knew people or we had friends like Lysandra's.

This book was a great read for a NA and for a YA. Thank you Jen Naumann for sending us a copy of your books. We truly appreciate it and we can't wait to read the rest of books including Mind Static.

Interview Q&A's

What inspired you to write your first book and how long did it take you to complete it?

If we're talking about my first published book, the story of What I've Done came to me one day while listening to Jack Johnson. I can't get any more specific as I would be revealing a major spoiler that I've worked very hard to protect since the book's release. ;) The first draft was something I wrote during NaNoWriMo, and the re-writes took probably a good month or two before starting the next rounds with my editor. In all it probably took a few months.

If we're talking my first full length book that never saw the light of day beyond my dot matrix printer, I believe in junior high and high school I often wrote books in the span of a weekend. I still have all those books—they're a total riot to read now! Back then I was obsessed with John Hughes films and anything involving the Brat Pack. I wrote myself into stories with Sam from Sixteen Candles and Jules from St. Elmo's Fire. I guess you could say I was writing fan fiction before it was considered cool.

Out of all the books you have written, which is your favorite and who is your favorite character?

Agh, this is like asking a mother to pick her favorite child! They're all very dear to me for their own reasons, but I think Mind Static was probably the most fun to write, followed closely by The Day Zombies Ruined My Perfectly Boring Life. Each of the heroines in these stories was full of wit and good humor, so I had a blast stepping into their shoes. As for my favorite character, it would probably be Harrison from Shymers. He has a special place in my heart for all he went through, and after writing from his point of view for part of the book, I really feel as if I was in his head for a time. Just like Olive, I want to wrap my arms around the poor guy and tell him that I'm there for him.

How much of the book is realistic and are experiences based on someone you know, or events in your own life?

Without giving too much away to those who have yet to read Cheating Death, I know someone who had a bad party experience very similar to Lysandra's. It's scary when you think of all the teen girls who drink excessively at parties without anyone watching out for them (and I can say that from experience). I also had a near drowning experience while at a lake cabin up north, but I was sitting on my grandma's lap and not my mom's. Thankfully I got over the horrible memories, and didn't develop an aversion to water the way Lysandra did.

What was the hardest part of writing your book?

I would probably have to say the hardest part is always going through the re-writes. A friend recently told me her first drafts sound like they were written by a sixth grader, and I'm guessing that's true of all writers. We have these visions and thoughts of characters and their stories that have been invading our heads, and they don't always come out sounding the way you expected them to, or things just don't flow right at first. It's kind of like taking a wad of runny clay, and trying to make it into a beautiful vase. There are days you about have to be a magician to make things work.

If you can go back and change anything you have written, what would it be and why?

In two of my books (Shymers and The Day Zombies Ruined My Perfectly Boring Life) I left major cliff hangers. I thought doing something like that would be fun, kind of like a season finale, but a lot of people are annoyed by the incomplete resolution they're left with. Now there's a ton of pressure to get the sequels out, and I tend to fold under that kind of stress. After writing so many other stories since those two, I worry I won't be able to get back into my characters' heads. When I recently finished the first draft of the zombie sequel, it felt like my biggest accomplishment as a writer to date. I wrote Cheating Death with the backlash of these other two books in mind, and wanted to give Lysandra's story a solid resolution. I was actually crying when I wrote the final scene.

What books/authors have influenced your writing?

I really can't say that my writing is like that of any authors' I've read, although I enjoy the terrifying element of Stephen King's work, the down-to-earth feel Lauren Oliver is able to create for her characters, and the heart-warming feel JK Rowling achieved with the Harry Potter series. My writing is constantly evolving, taking on the good elements of every amazing book I can get my hands on.

Do you have anything specific that you want to say to your readers?

A heartfelt THANK YOU for giving my stories a chance! I appreciate each and every one of you, especially those who take the time to actually leave reviews on websites like Goodreads and Amazon. Without people like you, I wouldn't love my job nearly as much as I do, and I'd probably still be writing books that spend the rest of their lives in binders underneath my bed.

Love and Lists by Tara Sivec

Love and Lists (Chocoholics #1)
By Tara Sivec
Published: October 1, 2013
Genre: New Adult

Love and Lists is the first book in the Chocolate Lovers spinoff Chocoholics:
The foulmouthed offspring tell their stories. Twenty five year old Gavin Ellis has always had the love and support of his family ever since he was a little boy and couldn't stop talking about his penis. He's also always had their unsolicited advice and uncanny knack of embarrassing him at all costs. Now that he's an adult and trying to convince the love of his life to love him back, things haven't changed very much from when he was younger. When Gavin's best friend Tyler suggests he make a todo list of items that will ensure he wins the girl, Gavin is one hundred percent on board: after a few six packs. After puking in the shrubs, a bad experience with Viagra, a SexEd course gone wrong, and a slew of other mishaps courtesy of his family and friends, Gavin is pretty sure this list will be the death of him. Sometimes, trying to make someone love you with a list isn't always the best idea. Especially when "Show her your penis" is the first "todo" item...

J&M's Book Diaries Rating:

J&M's Review:
This spin-off series the Chocoholics is about the offsprings of our two favorite couples. Gavin Ellis is now a grown 25 year old and Charlotte is a 22 year old & the oldest daughter to Liz and Jim. Since they were young, before they can even remember how or why, both Gavin and Charlotte knew they had the hots for one another. Through all the years of growing up and being best friends neither one of them ever had the courage to tell each other of their true feelings and they are unaware of the love they actually have for the other.

Now older and seeing that Charlotte is dating a guy longer than a few weeks. Gavin and his friend/dorm room-mate Tyler came up with an outrageous lists of things that will help Gavin win Charlotte's heart. Through the book he goes through the steps of doing so and makes a complete fool out of himself.

Without the knowledge of Gavin's doings. Charlotte and her "boyfriend" Rocco come up with a lists to win Gavin's heart and attention as well.

With all the back and forth between the two they finally have their moment and it becomes a sweet-disaster. Not their relationship, but their new sex life.

This book was short, but an entertaining read. Although filled with lots of awkward and embarrassing scenes. It was just hard for us to picture our 4 year old Gavin grown and talking about his sex life & let alone, can we picture our sweet-sexy Carter and old man. With that said, the story was deliciously sweet, flirty, & witty. We did appreciate the fact that she added all the previous characters in the book and they are still as loving and hilarious as ever! Even though we didn't think it was as humorous as the Chocolate Lovers series, we still enjoyed it.

Interview Q&A's

What inspired you to write your first book and how long did it take you to complete it?

My kids inspired me for the most part. I used to have a Facebook page called “Shit my kids say and do” where I would post all of the…well…shit they said and did LOL! After a while, people started telling me I should write a book. I used to write short stories and poems all the time so putting all of the crazy antics of my kids into a story was kind of easy. Seriously, when my kids talk, stories just write themselves! Add to that the fact that I’m surrounded by crazy friends and family and you’ve got a laundry list of inappropriate stories to tell. Once I sat down and really focused on the actual story, I’d say it took me about a month to finish it. When I have a storyline and characters in my head that won’t shut up, I need to get them out quickly!

Out of all the books you have written which is your favorite & who is your favorite character?

Even though the Chocolate Lovers series is what initially got my name out there and is responsible for this amazing journey I’m on, Watch Over Me will always be my favorite and the closest to my heart. It’s a fictionalized story of my life after I lost my mother a few years ago and it was pure hell to tell it, but I’m so happy I did. The amazing emails I’ve received from fans telling me that I helped them learn how to move on after losing a loved one has made it all worth it.

How much of the book is realistic and are experiences based on someone you know, or events in your own life?

I’m pretty loud an inappropriate when you get to know me. Therefore, everyone I’m surrounded by is usually loud and inappropriate by proxy. Something funny always happens and people know by now that I can and will put those things into a book. At the end of the night, someone always says, “OMG I hope this is n the next book!”

What was the hardest part of writing your book?

Probably focusing on the story I’m supposed to be telling. I have a lot of things on my plate right now and I’m currently writing books in three different genres. My brain is a scary place to live, believe me!

If you can go back and change anything you have written what would it be & why?

I would never change any of it. I hope I’ve grown as a writer with each book I put out and I know I could probably go back and do things better, but I wouldn’t. Those books got me where I am today and I have to be satisfied with what I’ve accomplished, otherwise I’d second-guess everything I do.

What books/authors have influenced your writing?

There are too many to list! I’m amazed by the indie world right now. Every book I read just makes me want to better myself and makes me proud to be associated with these authors. When I grow up, I want to turn people on and make them cringe like CJ Roberts and Madeline Sheehan; I want to make them have all the feels like Andrea Randall, Tiffany King and Jasinda Wilder.

Do you have anything specific that you want to say to your readers?

Read my books. Or else ☺

A Little Too Far by Lisa Desrochers

A Little Too Far
By Lisa Desrochers
Published: September 17, 2013
Genre: Contemporary Romance

"Sinfully sexy, but utterly unique. My favorite New Adult book of the year!"
--CORA CARMACK, New York Times bestselling author of LOSING IT

Have you ever gone just a little too far?

Lexie Banks has.

Yep. She just had mind-blowing sex with her stepbrother. In her defense, she was on the rebound, and it’s more of a my-dad-happened-to-marry-a-woman-with-a-super-hot-son situation. But still, he’s been her best friend and confidant for the better part of the last few years … and is so off limits. It’s a good thing she’s leaving in two days for a year abroad in Rome.

But even thousands of miles away, Lexie can’t seem to escape trouble. Raised Catholic, she goes to confession in hopes of alleviating some of her guilt … and maybe not burning in hell. Instead, she stumbles out of the confessional and right into Alessandro Moretti, a young and very easy-on-the-eyes deacon … only eight months away from becoming a priest. Lexie and Alessandro grow closer, and when Alessandro’s signals start changing despite his vow of celibacy, she doesn’t know what to think. She’s torn between falling in love with the man she shouldn’t want and the man she can’t have. And she isn’t sure how she can live with herself either way.

J&M's Book Diaries rating:

J&M's Review:
This book is a must read! We can't even begin to review or summarize this book with out giving too much away. It's just one of those that you need to read because nothing we can say will do it justice. The author did a incredible job with execution. The subjects sound a little taboo when you read the description and despite the inappropriateness of a few certain topic, we couldn't put this book down…. it blew us away!

A Little Too Far is exactly as described. The entire story is filled with hot romance, awkward situations, and sexual tension. There is a love triangle in the story and although they are forbidden love-interest for Lexie (our heroin), both heroes are very lovable. Both guys are unbelievably sweet and completely different. The entire time reading this book , we were torn for Lexie. We thought we figured out who the heroin would end up with and yet we were surprised. The back and forth between the better heroes, and not knowing which direction she was going. Although Lexie ended up with the man we wanted her with, we can imagine there will readers whose hearts will be broken over Lexie’s heart-wrenching decision. Rarely can an author make you fall for two heroes in the span of one book but Lisa Desrochers definitely knew how to keep the story interesting.

This story is about much more than physical attraction and the allure of forbidden love. A Little Too Far is sexy, sinful and totally taboo, but also an amazing read! We can not wait for the second book to this series and see where and who our second hero ends up with.
